The Coolest Experimental Planes of World War II

Great designs

Several very capable fighters and bombers were developed and fielded by the major powers during the 1930s as World War II approached.

Germany produced some of the best, including the Messerschmitt Me-109:

Japan also developed sophisticated, capable warplanes, including the Mitsubishi “Zero”:

Britain developed the very capable Spitfire:

The United States developed several successful fighter and bomber designs, including the venerable B-17 “Flying Fortress:”

But once the war began, the Allies and Axis powers worked on building several new designs, based on improving avionics, technology, and capabilities as both sides sought advantages in air power.
